Seventh International Summit on the Future of Health Privacy
Is Health Privacy a Human Right?
Overview
The Seventh International Summit on the Future of Health Privacy (“Health Privacy Summit”) was held in Washington, D.C., on June 1–2, 2017. Health Privacy Summit 2017 convened leading voices from law, policy, technology, medicine, and civil society to explore one of the most pressing questions of our digital age: Is health privacy a fundamental human right? Across two days of dynamic programming, the Summit brought together domestic and international experts to examine how emerging technologies, legal frameworks, and ethical principles intersect in the evolving landscape of health data.
The 2017 theme reflected the growing urgency to reconcile innovation in digital health with the protection of individual autonomy, dignity, and freedom. From patient rights and data security to artificial intelligence and global data governance, the Summit offered a deep dive into the future of health privacy—and the responsibilities we all share in shaping it.
During the Summit's Celebration of Privacy, Patient Privacy Rights awarded the Louis D. Brandeis Privacy Award to Nikolaus Forgo, for his extensive work in European research projects on clinical trials, privacy and consent. Additionally, PPR awarded the Top Data Detective Award to Ji Su Yoo, for her studies that exposed vulnerabilities in datasets and data-sharing practices.
